Faulty ABS modulator

Hello everyone!

First of all sorry for typing in English language, I don't speak German at all

I was at BMW service recently and my R 1200 GS 2004 has detected with a faulty ABS modulator (first model). I couldn't believe my ears when they've asked for a nearly 2000 euros for the replacement part! That's the third value of my bike! Incredible! : Eek: I've also noticed that many people on this forum share the same problem as I, so it's obviously a problem in production. That's a real shame for BMW which is well known for quality.

So, now I'm searching for a service where I can send my modulator for repair, or some dealer where I can buy used one for a decent price. I've found on this forum (by using Google translator) that there's one dealer in Leverkusen who can fix it for a smaller amount of money but I couldn't find any contact.

If the dealer in Leverkusen is the closest, You should see him immediately.
(If he's a BMW-dealer and service-point). A phone-call in advance may be useful.
You may also try to contact BMW in Munic to find out, if there is any chance for
a less expensive exchange or chance e of repair (whin I doubt).
If I get You right, the bike stil lruns, and only the ABS does not work.
So You can ride Yourself and don not need a lift.

The bike still runs but ABS light and some other are flashing. ABS is not functional any more but brakes are working. Leverkusen is pretty far away and to Munich is about 1000 km of distance, but I can drive there or just remove the ABS modulator and send it by DHL. I just have to find a good service or a dealer who can repair it for a decent price.

On their website there's a similar ABS modulator with a repair price of € 699.00 (€ 831.81 including VAT) + shipping costs in both directions, and they need about 40-60 working days to fix it. That's too much for me

I think what he meant was for your to contact BMW HQ directly and maybe get them to a "goodwill" solution. For example they supply the part and you just pay the costs for changing the part.
however considering its a 2004 that is somewhat unlikely. Still, asking doesnt hurt and if it was in fact a production fault maybe you get lucky.
Somebody here can probably supply the correct mail adress for that as the BMW site just states that these requests have to be filed at a BMW Motorrad Partner.

EDIT: There are a number of trustworthy Dealers out there that sell used BMW parts. Just do a google search for "BMW motorrad gebrauchtteile". With most of them you can just send a request for a specific part and they will tell you whether or not its available and what it will cost.

There are some used modulators available on ebay - see below.
But you still need a BMW dealer to install that device on your bike...
